Why is Paêbirú so rare?
I'm here to tell you 4 reasons why 'Paêbirú' is one of the rarest records in Brazil:
1. Paêbirú was released as a double vinyl with an 8-page booklet. Such material was very expensive, and only a thousand copies were pressed.
2. There is a mystique surrounding this album, as the songs were inspired by a mushroom trip at an archaeological site in Paraíba and the indigenous legends of that region.
3. In the year the album was supposed to be released, one of the biggest floods in the history of Recife occurred. Besides taking many lives, the water also destroyed almost the entire pressing of Paêbirú, which was in the record label’s office. They say that only 300 copies, which were with the artists, survived.
4. Paêbirú blended Brazilian popular rhythms with rock, jazz, and even oriental influences, making this album a symbol of psychedelia, sought after by collectors worldwide.
