Racional is one of Tim Maia’s rarest albums.

Once, I dropped my copy, and it broke.
Today, I decided to paint it in my house. But what’s the story behind Racional?

It was the early ’70s—a time of breaking established beliefs and seeking spirituality. Already a star, Tim wanted to break free from the control of major labels. He signed a deal with RCA, demanding 100% artistic control over the album’s recording, along with a massive advance.

At the time, Tim was using mescaline, and in one of those psychedelic trips, he came across the Cultura Racional book. In short, Cultura Racional is a philosophy that claims to explain where we come from and where we’re going.

Tim was mesmerized and wanted to BREAK away from his chaotic lifestyle…

Obsessed with the belief, he rewrote the album’s lyrics to promote Cultura Racional.

The label refused and BROKE the contract.

But the album was nearly finished, and with the advance money, Tim funded the production of Racional records, launching his own label, Seroma.

And that’s how one of the grooviest albums in MPB was born—full of lyrics that seem to make no sense but tell the story of someone willing to change the course of their life for something they believe in…

Ten years ago, I broke my copy of this album… I dropped out of college, moved to a new city… and decided to live off vinyl! Today, this record is etched into my story.

Time passes, the vinyl resists!
